If you run an SEO agency or a growing business in the UK, you have probably seen link building quotes that range from a few pounds to several thousand for what looks like the same thing: “a backlink”. That spread makes budgeting hard and makes it easy to overpay, or worse, to buy cheap links that never move rankings. This guide explains what actually drives the cost of link building in 2026, shows real per-link prices from our own pricing page, and gives you a simple way to work out a budget for your next campaign.

A quick note on currency: like most link vendors serving UK agencies, we price in US dollars, so every figure below is in USD.

The short answer: what does a link cost?

For a contextual link on a real website with genuine organic traffic, you should expect to pay roughly $85 to $489 per link, depending mainly on the authority and traffic of the site. Here is our current price list, which we publish openly so you can compare like with like:

TierDomain RatingMin. organic trafficGuest post (incl. content)Niche edit
StarterDR 20–29500+/mo$99$85
StandardDR 30–491,000+/mo$125$109
PremiumDR 50–695,000+/mo$319$249
AuthorityDR 70+10,000+/mo$489$389

Prices are per link, content is included in guest post prices, and there is no minimum order. Agencies ordering in volume get 10% off at 10+ links a month and 15% off at 25+ links a month.

What actually drives the price of a link?

Two links can look identical in a report and still differ in price by a factor of five. These are the factors that matter most.

1. Authority of the website

Domain Rating (DR) and similar third-party metrics estimate how strong a site’s own backlink profile is. Higher-authority sites receive more requests, are more selective, and charge more to publish. That is why our Authority tier (DR 70+) costs several times more than our Starter tier (DR 20–29). Authority is a useful signal, but on its own it is easy to fake, which is why it should never be the only thing you pay for.

2. Real organic traffic

Traffic is a far better test of whether a site is genuine. A site that Google sends real visitors to is a site Google trusts. Every tier in our table has a minimum monthly organic traffic requirement, from 500+ visits at Starter to 10,000+ at Authority. If a vendor offers “DR 70” links at bargain prices, check the traffic first: high DR with almost no traffic is a classic sign of a manipulated or penalised domain.

3. Relevance to your niche

A link from a relevant site with modest metrics is usually worth more than a link from a high-DR site that has nothing to do with your topic. Relevant sites are harder to find and harder to secure, so relevance adds outreach time, and that time is part of what you pay for.

4. Type of link: guest post or niche edit

A guest posts is a new article written for and published on the target site, with your link placed in context. A niche edit (also called a link insertion) adds your link to an existing article that is already published and indexed. Because a niche edit does not require a new article, it usually costs a little less. In our pricing, a niche edit is between $14 and $100 cheaper than a guest post in the same tier.

5. Content quality

Content is a hidden cost in many quotes. Some vendors charge separately for writing; others include thin, generic articles that editors reject or that readers ignore. Our guest post prices include a 600–1,000 word article by a native-level writer, so the price you see is the price you pay.

6. Turnaround and guarantees

Speed and protection also have value. Ask any vendor how quickly links go live and what happens if a link is removed later. We publish within 48–72 hours of you approving the domains, and we replace any link that is removed within 12 months of going live, free of charge. We do not guarantee links beyond 12 months, and you should be wary of anyone promising “permanent” links.

Cheap links vs. quality links: where the risk sits

It is tempting to buy the cheapest links you can find. The problem is that very cheap links tend to come from the places Google is best at ignoring or penalising: private blog networks (PBNs), link farms that publish anything for a fee, expired domains rebuilt purely to sell links, and hacked or hidden links. Google’s own spam policies describe link schemes in detail, and its guidance on qualifying outbound links explains how sites are expected to mark sponsored links.

In practice, a $15 link that Google ignores costs you $15 for nothing. A link from a network that later gets caught can cost you rankings. Paying more for a real site with real readers is not a luxury; it is the part of the budget that actually works. Our link quality policy sets out exactly what we refuse to use and the minimum checks every site must pass.

How to budget for link building

There is no single “right” budget, but you can plan one sensibly in four steps.

Example budgets (using our published prices)

Monthly planLinksApprox. monthly cost
Small local business test4 × Standard guest posts$500
Growing site2 × Premium guest posts + 4 × Standard guest posts$1,138
Agency reseller (10% off)10 × Standard guest posts$1,125

These are illustrations based on list prices, not a recommendation for every site. The right mix depends on your niche, competition and current link profile.

What should be included in the price?

When comparing quotes, check that each of these is included, not charged as an extra:

  • A shortlist of domains that you approve before anything goes live
  • The article itself (for guest posts), written to a professional standard
  • A dofollow, contextual link inside the body content, not a footer or author bio
  • A clear live report with the URL of every placement
  • A replacement policy if a link is removed
  • Confidentiality if you are an agency reselling to your own clients

All of these are included as standard with Linkvista. Agencies also get unbranded reports and an NDA at no extra cost, so you can resell links under your own brand.

Red flags when buying links

  • Prices that look too good for the metrics (for example “DR 60 for $20”)
  • No list of domains to approve, or domains hidden until after payment
  • Sites with high DR but little or no organic traffic
  • Domains registered only recently but sold on old “authority” (you can look up any domain’s age in seconds)
  • Sites that publish on every topic, from casinos to cooking to crypto
  • “Permanent” or “lifetime” link guarantees with no explanation
  • No answer to the question “what happens if a link is removed?”

How Linkvista prices link building

We built our pricing to be the kind we wanted to see as buyers: simple, public and per link. You can see every tier on our pricing page. Every site we offer is manually checked against our link quality policy, including at least 500 monthly organic visits that are stable over six months. You approve the domains, we publish within 48–72 hours, and we replace removed links free within 12 months.

If you would rather hand over the whole strategy, our full link building service covers research, prospecting and placement as a managed campaign. If you know exactly what you need, you can order guest posts or niche edits individually, with no minimum order.
